Nikita Montgomery - Hazel O. Salon

How/what did you start your business?

My cousin and I are both entrepreneurs and always wanted to go into business together.  Our family has deep roots in Alexandria, with my grandparents having lived here for over 50 years.  Our grandmother was a hairstylist for over 50 years and as beauty connoisseurs we thought it fitting to create a space for guests to enjoy the ultimate beauty experience that also has legacy.

What inspires you?

People.  I'm always learning and observing.  I love that people can be great in their own unique way and that inspires me most.

What motivates you?

My children.  I know that my job as a mom is to not only care for them, but to lead and inspire them and I never want to fall short of that.

What are you most proud of?

My children - they have great character and impress me daily.  Other adults in their lives frequently compliment their behavior and intelligence and it always makes me feel like no matter how challenging parenting can be, good parenting always produces great fruit.

Tell us something that folks wouldn't know about you?

When my husband isn't around I listen to SportsTalk Radio.

Tell us about a time you overcame a challenge?

Opening Hazel O. was extremely challenging, as my first brick and mortar there were obstacles that my co-founder and I encountered that were new to me but I no matter how hard it became I knew we couldn't quit.

How do you overcome adversity?

I pray and refuse to quit.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own business?

Passion is not enough, you must have a plan.
